Video:Ted Karfakis-Revisiting his Masters deegre dissertation area 17 years on in Iracambi, South Brazil
Our research director and head of the Kalamos and Kastos sustainable development program, Ted Karfakis did his Masters of Science dissertation in Imperial College London in the understorey regeneration under Eucalyptus plantations in Southern Brazil in the State of Minas Gerais with the collaboration of the Iracambi Atlantic rainforest research and conservation center back in 2006 and 2007 . Since then he had the chance to revisit the site as part of our ongoing partnership in developing an acoustic monitoring data analysis system with the afforementioned NGO and others. He was very glad to see his management reccomendations successfully applied with visible positive results .These guidelines he gave way back in distant 2007. This is an important tool for the restoration of the highlly fragmented atlantic forest ,a forest far more depleted than its more famous coastal counterpart the Atlantic rainforest and the Cerrado ecosystem and here it is confirmed that like in other parts of the neotropics under certain conditions industrial tree plantations can be rewilded and thus be used as a restoration tool with the concept of the nurse tree as the guiding principle offering cheap nature based alternatives to planting with native species in certain cases.
